As for my next project (2nd) to test my sewing skill, my hubby suggested a simple throw pillow cover. I have bought already some half meters of fabric in Doha souq waqif (arabic term for market). It's in this place that I had found some very nice fabric stores where you can get a good haggling of the prices.
Heart Throw Pillow Cover
In making this throw pillow cover I just measured one of our sofa throw pillows. I also want to put a patch of any pattern at the front. I decided to put a heart patch using a colored floral fabric. I cut two squares of each fabric, the plain and the floral. I thought of making this into a zippered throw pillow cover. I got anxious thinking of putting a zipper though. It will be my first time to sew with a zipper.
I just use the top stitched on sewing all the sides. I used the floral fabric for the back side and the plain at the front. But first, I cut a heart shaped on the floral fabric and stitched at the front of the plain fabric using the zigzag stitch. Then I sew the zipper on both of the fabric, before stitching all the sides together of both fabric.
Star Throw Pillow Cover
Using just the same method on the Heart Throw Pillow Cover, I made another one using a different pattern of fabric, and a star patch sewn at the front. In making the star I cut five triangles of the printed fabric and sew each one using the zigzag stitch, then connecting the corners to form into a star.
Still, there are some imperfections on my sewing skills. The obvious one is the alignment of the zigzag stitch on the patches, especially on the heart patch where the curve sides are a challenge on the zigzag stitching. But overall, this is just an easy project, ideal for beginners like me.
